Welcome to BCLCA

We are an organization of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and other individuals who wish to protect, support, and promote breastfeeding and chestfeeding. We are working to make breastfeeding the norm in British Columbia.

We support the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative and the World Health Organization International Code of Breast-milk Substitutes, also known as the WHO Code.

Land acknowledgement

Members of the BCLCA live, work and play on many traditional and unceded territories in British Columbia.  We are committed to decolonization, reconciliation, and creating lasting relationships with families across the province.

Language

The BCLCA is committed to supporting families of all gender identities.  We acknowledge that not all parents who feed their babies with their body identify as female, and that commonly used words associated with feeding babies are implicitly gendered. We encourage all lactation providers to have respectful conversations with families to identify and utilize personalized language. The BCLCA is currently using language guided by the SOGC and Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine statements. As gender inclusive language continues to evolve, we welcome further learning while we work towards inclusive support for all British Columbia Families.
